An Xiaotong Chinese-French, b. 1971

Overview

An Xiaotong, born in Xi’an in 1971, lives and works in Paris and Beijing. An works across a variety of mediums, including installation and painting, as well as design—having founded her own artistic design brand, ANXIAOTONG, in 2008.
An Xiaotong’s work draws on a defining phenomenon of our era: how people connect through the Internet and the virtual world in general. She collects images found on websites, blogs, discussion forums, and video games, transforming them into new forms—
at times creating painted backdrops, at others, pixelated friezes made of Lego bricks.
Since 2018, An Xiaotong has also been focusing on ink painting. She created a massive 60-meter-long landscape inspired by traditional Chinese landscape art. Rendered in a black-and-white monochrome palette, these reduced and stylized panoramas resemble photographic negatives. They depict post-catastrophic ruins or schematic visions of an uncertain future.
